Literacy President Questions for Candidates

Overview of the Literacy President Initiative

The following steps have been completed by the Literacy President Group:

  • In the spring of 2006, on the National Literacy Advocacy (NLA) electronic list ("listserv"), the Literacy President Group asked the field to identify questions to ask candidates running for President in 2008.

  • The Literacy President Group placed these questions in an online survey, and the top seven questions were identified by the field as the prioriies to ask candidates, with the understanding that the Literacy President Group might choose to add or remove one or two questions, and that a final list would be made available to the field. Survey tips were available to teachers to assist learners to participate in the survey. Survey results were posted to the NLA electronic list.

  • From these results the Literacy President Group made a final set of questions to be used to raise the issues at public events.

  • The Literacy President Group created another set of questions from the field’s questions and from suggestions from others in the Literacy President Group, designed from our understanding of the candidates’ priorities. See Questions for Candidates to be Submitted to Campaign Staff. These questions will be presented to candidates through their campaign staff and responses will be posted to the Literacy President Web site.
